The landscape
of San Joaquin County would be quite empty without
the contributions of Roek Construction. Roek’s
handiwork is evident in all directions. Roek has
erected more schools and public buildings than
any other contractor, as well as an impressive
number of business facilities.
Now a fourth generation business,
Roek continues the tradition of building integrity
started over a century ago by great-grandfather
John Roek in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Founder George Roek migrated to
San Joaquin County in 1919. In 1926 he opened
George Roek Construction, operating out of his
house on Mission Street.
All three of George’s sons
– Jerry, Jay and Don, grew up in the business.
They supplemented on-the-job learning with construction
and engineering classes at Stockton College, the
predecessor of Delta College.
The brothers learned much from their
father. “He taught us conservative financial
responsibility and integrity in dealing with subcontractors
and clients,” quoted Jerry in a 1981 interview.
The brothers formed The Roek Construction
Corporation in 1957.
In 1981 the brothers purchased the
century-old Hickinbotham Bros. building at 417
E. Main Street to demonstrate their commitment
to the ongoing revitalization of downtown Stockton.
Roek has also contributed to Stockton’s
growth as a regional distribution hub, building
warehouses and manufacturing facilities.
The Roeks have also been active
in the community, even participating in Stockton’s
campaign to change its image and become the Asparagus
Capital of the World.

Construction Today
Current President Brian Roek learned the business
the same way his father did – from the ground
up. He supplemented on-the-job training with engineering
and carpentry courses at Delta College and went
through union-sponsored apprenticeship training.
From there he worked his way up to the top, starting
as journeyman carpenter.
Brian’s father Don recently
retired but remains on the board.
